I remember the excitement of first dates… and the hopes tied to it. There you are trying to impress a person and hoping that it will turn to romance. Exciting times, yes, but just a word of caution – Don’t get too excited.
Here are 10 things to remember on your first date. 5 for men and 5 for women since they approach first dates differently.
Ask your date where he plans to take you. If it’s a surprise, ask what you should wear. You don’t want to be wearing high heeled shoes when he’s taking you to the beach. It’s just uncool!
Don’t grill your date.
It’s ok to be curious and be interested in him, but keep the conversation light. Don’t play 20 questions and start grilling him about very personal things. Leave that for the 10th
Offer to pay your share.
It’s unromantic but times have changed. Nowadays, it’s not weird for a woman to offer to share the bill or even pay for it if they’re the ones who asked a man out. Gauge the financial capability of your partner. If he asked you, let him plan the day and don’t suggest to go to places he can’t afford and put him in an uncomfortable situation.
Don’t start acting like your whole life depends on that date. Your date will sense if you’re the desperate type and you can be sure there won’t be a 2nd Just have a good time and be pleasant company.
Be a Lady.
You want to show your partner your best side. We’re not saying that you should pretend to be someone you’re not. Be yourself but put your best foot forward. Don’t laugh too loud. Don’t monopolize the conversation. Don’t drink too much. Really, you don’t want to scare your date away do you?
Even if a woman asked you out, if you can afford it, pay for everything. It’s the gentlemanly thing to do. Women are used to having their own money and being independent and all, but if you really want to impress – treat her out. Women love that. If you asked her on a date, plan something fun and simple and affordable for you.
Don’t fart or burp loudly!
These are things that women only find endearing when you’re their husband. On the first date, you have to look and act like a knight in shining armor. Don’t show your rowdy caveman side and scare her off! A first date is like a state visit. There are certain ceremonies and protocols and farting is a definite no-no.
Go easy on the booze.
If you’re going to a party, you can have fun but go easy on the alcohol, especially if you’re driving. This is not the time to indulge! I have never read a story anywhere about a drunk knight in shining armor. Just imagine yourself puking on your first date. What a disaster!
Wherever it is you’re taking her, make sure she’s the star of the night. Be extra attentive without being stifling. Anticipate her needs. If you’re going out with friends, make sure you never leave her side for long periods. You’re with her, make her feel it.
Bring a condom.
If your date turned out very well, who knows… sparks may fly! It would be the responsible thing to do to have a condom with you at all times anyway. Sex with a person you are not familiar with is not really recommended but sometimes things happen and you want to be prepared for the unexpected.
First dates can be the beginning of a beautiful relationship. Obviously, the date is happening because you’re interested to know each other better – unless it’s a blind date! Don’t act so desperate to please your date – keep it cool and easy – and just see where it goes.
Trying too hard may ruin everything and scare off the other person. Find out why they’re dating. Do some due diligence. Are they looking to get into a new relationship? Are they on the rebound? Do they just want to have fun? Find out more about the person you’re dating so you know how to behave around them.
